Yamaha's compact NS-AW150 bookshelf speakers offer an affordable way to enjoy your music or television programming on a deck or under a porch. These speakers can also be brought indoors during the colder months and set up for two-channel indoor listening, thanks to their high build quality and good sound. Sold as a pair, each speaker features a 5-inch high-compliance, polypropylene, mica-filled woofer and a 5-inch PEI dome tweeter. The drivers are optimized for high rigidity and low mass, resulting in a reasonably high sensitivity (80 dB with 2.83V at 1 meter), allowing modest amplifiers to drive them without much difficulty.
The speakers' acoustic-suspension cabinets are sealed to prevent undue resonance or tubby, tuneless bass, a common issue with low-cost ported designs. With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, the NS-AW150s work well with amplifiers up to 35 watts per channel, nominal, or 120 watts, peak power. They boast a frequency response of 80 to 40,000 Hz (+/-3 dB), providing decent bass output for their compact size and an unusually extended high-frequency response for demanding digital media.
For indoor use, users may want to consider adding a subwoofer to enhance the bass performance. When selecting a subwoofer, it's important to choose one with a variable crossover so that its upper frequency can be tailored to effectively "take over" at the point of the NS-AW150s' lowest deliverable frequency.
The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing them to be placed on or near a TV or video monitor without fear of picture degradation. Five-way binding posts simplify connection with various speaker cable terminations, including banana plugs. The package even includes two lengths of speaker cable to get you started.
While the NS-AW150s are not intended for prolonged exposure to the elements, their sealed enclosures and rugged metal grilles make them water-resistant and able to withstand light wind and rain, making them suitable for use on a deck or under a porch. The speakers come with mounting bases and brackets, further enhancing their versatility.
